MAP International Provides $10 Million in Essential Medicines and Medical Supplies to Haiti Relief
Brunswick, GA (PRWEB) January 31, 2010 -- MAP International (MAP.org) announced today that the organization has essential medicines and medical supplies valued at $10 million dollars committed to the relief effort in Haiti. Much of this desperately needed cargo has already been received by medical partners in the country and more is currently in route to Port-au-Prince by air or sea.
Within hours of hearing the news of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the island nation on January 12, MAP's relief effort was underway, reaching out to long-term partners in Haiti with the offer of immediate support for the devastated country.
Because of MAP's 40 year history of supplying medical shipments to clinics and hospitals throughout Haiti and because almost $3 million in regular support shipments to the country could quickly be diverted to the hardest hit areas, MAP was in a unique position get critically needed supplies out of its distribution center in Brunswick, Georgia and into the hands of caregivers already working in the country. These initial shipments were among the first to reach caregivers in the Port-au-Prince area.
MAP's Director of Relief, John Garvin arrived in Haiti within days of the massive quake, carrying the first 14 boxes of essential medicines, wound care supplies, water filters and communications gear. He was successful in contacting some of MAP's major long-term partners, assessing their needs and mobilization efforts.
Our team at the Brunswick Distribution Center continues to field new requests from partners on the ground in Haiti. We are hearing from medical mission teams from across the country who are scheduling short-term mission trips as soon as regular air travel to the island resumes. MAP is preparing to meet the demand for the many Travel Packs that these volunteer teams will need as they seek to assist in Haiti's long term recovery.
Two International Emergency Health Kits, which are large modules specially designed to provide crisis care for 10,000 people for three months, are set to ship to MAP partners already operating in Haiti. These shipments will help as situations begins to stabilize and the country starts the rebuilding process.
